Rosa Parks, Why Your Silence Says You Agree
Rosa Parks, who died yesterday, is a great example of the power of one and the spark that it could ignite. Her refusal to give up her seat to a white person was responsible for igniting the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which led to the desegregation of the bus system. Although this happened a little less than 50 years ago and much has changed since then, it is sad that we are still fighting for human rights. And what's even more disturbing is that many of us are still being looked down upon amongst our own race for simply being attracted to the same sex.
Our ancestors died, took whips and spit in the face for our freedom and basic human rights. Let's not turn our backs on the lives they sacrificed. But instead, let's pull from their spirit and use the same courage and strength that resides in all of us to fight current injustices. So if by chance, you are a member of or attend a church that gay bashes, take a stand to stop it. You are still human, despite your same-sex attraction. Remember, your silence says that you agree.
